1795 Flowing Hair Large Cent (1c) Lettered Edge
NGC F15 BN
The 1795 Liberty Cap cent represents one of America's earliest copper issues, produced when the nation's coinage was still in its infancy. The Letter Edge variety, referring to the lettered edge reading "ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR," is a distinct type within this short-lived series. These early coppers were struck by hand at the Philadelphia Mint using primitive technology, resulting in frequent variations in quality and appearance.
This F15 example displays a pleasing chocolate-brown patina that has developed naturally over its 225+ years of existence. Despite moderate wear consistent with the grade, the important design elements remain clearly visible - Liberty's profile shows good definition and the reverse wreath details are well-preserved. The surfaces exhibit the honest wear expected of a circulated early copper, free from any significant problems that often plague these issues. For an 18th-century copper in this grade range, the eye appeal is quite strong, making this an excellent representative of our nation's earliest coinage.
