1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar (50c) E/A
PCGS F12
The 1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar was struck during one of America's most pivotal historical periods - the final year of the War of 1812. As the conflict with Great Britain was drawing to a close, the Philadelphia Mint produced these half dollars while the nation's economy was under significant strain. The E/A variety (showing an erroneous "A" punched under the correct "E" in STATES) is a fascinating engraving error that adds to this already historically significant issue.
This PCGS F12 example displays honest wear consistent with decades of circulation during the early Republic. The medium gray surfaces show even wear across the high points, with Liberty's cap and the eagle's features softened but still clearly visible. Despite its time in commerce, the coin maintains strong border denticles and clear date and stars. The surfaces are remarkably problem-free for a circulated early half dollar, free of the heavy marks or scratches that often plague coins of this era, giving it superior eye appeal for the assigned grade.
