1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar (50c) E/A
PCGS VF30
The 1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar was struck during the height of the War of 1812, when silver coinage was essential for commerce in a nation still establishing its monetary system. The Overton 108a E/A variety represents a fascinating die state where an "E" was punched over an "A" in the word "STATES" on the reverse, creating a distinctive variety that specialists actively seek. This die error occurred during the hand-punching process when individual letters were manually placed into the die, and the incorrect letter had to be corrected.
This PCGS VF30 example displays excellent eye appeal for the grade, with smooth, problem-free surfaces and nice even gray toning throughout. The wear is consistent with the assigned grade, showing good detail retention in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's feathers. The E/A overpunching is clearly visible on the reverse, making this an excellent example of this popular die variety. A solid coin that would fit nicely into either a date set or variety collection.
