1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar (50c) Square Base 2 O-135
PCGS XF40
The 1827 Capped Bust half dollar is a relatively common date in the series, but the Square Base 2 variety adds a nice touch of specificity for variety collectors. The Square Base 2 designation refers to the distinctive shape of the "2" in the date, where the base forms a sharp, angular line rather than the curved base seen on other 1827 varieties. It's one of those fun little details that keeps Capped Bust collecting interesting beyond just date and mintmark.
This PCGS XF40 example displays excellent eye appeal with smooth, even gray surfaces and solid remaining detail throughout. The wear is perfectly consistent with the grade - you can see light friction on the high points of Liberty's hair and cheek, while the stars and lettering remain sharp and well-defined. The reverse eagle shows similar wear patterns with good feather detail still visible. Clean, original surfaces free of any distracting marks make this a very pleasant representative of both the date and variety.
