1901 Barber Half Dollar (50c)
PCGS VF25
The 1901 Barber half dollar represents the early years of this classic series, struck during Charles Barber's tenure as Chief Engraver. With a mintage of over 4.2 million pieces, the Philadelphia issue isn't particularly scarce, but finding problem-free examples with original surfaces and good eye appeal becomes more challenging as you move up the grading scale.
This PCGS VF25 example displays exactly what you want to see in a mid-grade Barber half - honest wear with no distracting marks or issues. The surfaces show attractive medium-gray patina with excellent detail retention for the grade. Liberty's facial features remain sharp and the eagle's feathers show good definition. The coin has that appealing "old silver" look that comes from decades of natural aging, and the overall eye appeal is quite pleasing for a circulated example.
