1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel (5c)
PCGS
MS66
CAC
The 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel represents the first year of James Earle Fraser's iconic design and the first of two distinct varieties produced that year. The Type 1 version, with the buffalo standing on a raised mound, was quickly replaced by the Type 2 design with recessed ground, making these early examples particularly significant to numismatic history.
This MS66 CAC-approved example is absolutely stunning with exceptional luster and crisp, well-defined details throughout. The surfaces display a pleasing silver-gray patina with remarkable preservation and virtually no notable contact marks - rare for a coin that typically shows numerous bag marks even in high grades. The strike is bold, with excellent definition on the buffalo's head and shoulder, areas that often come weak on this issue. The eye appeal is outstanding, with the coin's natural surfaces remaining completely original and undisturbed since the day it was struck.
