1917-S Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter (25c)
ANACS MS61 FH
The 1917-S Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter is a significant issue from the first full year of the series' production. The San Francisco mint struck just 1,952,000 quarters that year, making it considerably scarcer than its Philadelphia counterpart. This coin features the more controversial "bare breast" design (gasp!) that was modified later in 1917.
This MS61 example offers more than its grade might suggest. The surfaces display attractive original toning with hints of russet patina forming around the devices and near the rims. Despite the expected light bagmarks for the grade, the central details remain impressively sharp, earning the coveted Full Head designation. The reverse eagle shows strong feather definition and the coin retains good luster beneath the light toning. The eye appeal exceeds what's typically found at this grade level, making this a desirable example of this early San Francisco mint issue.
