Another victim of overzealous die polishing, the 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo nickel is a famous mint error from the Denver Mint. The die polishing error resulted in the removal of the buffalo's front right leg on the reverse side. This mistake occurred during an attempt to remove die clash marks, inadvertently creating the distinctive and highly recognizable "three-legged" appearance. With a regular mintage of 17,826,000 for the year, only a small number of these error coins were produced and released into circulation.
An AU coin is one that shows just the slightest hint of wear, original mint luster, but no loss of detail. This coin makes the mark perfectly (and CAC agrees). Beautiful smooth surfaces, sharp details, no major marks or blemishes, and just the slightest hint of circulation. A wonderfully pleasing example to add to your collection.
