1799 Draped Bust Dollar ($1)
PCGS AU50
The 1799 Draped Bust Dollar represents the early years of American silver dollar production, when the fledgling U.S. Mint was still finding its footing. With a mintage of 423,515 pieces, the 1799 is among the more available dates in the early dollar series, though "available" is a relative term when discussing coins that are over two centuries old. Most survivors show significant wear from heavy circulation during an era when these large silver coins saw active commercial use.
This PCGS AU50 example displays the hallmarks of a coin that saw only light circulation before being preserved. The surfaces show even, natural toning with gray-brown patina that speaks to decades of careful storage. Liberty's portrait retains strong detail with only minor highpoint wear, while the reverse eagle shows similar preservation. The fields remain relatively smooth with few significant marks, and the overall eye appeal is quite solid for the grade. A nice representative example of America's early silver dollar coinage.
