1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar (50c) Lettered Edge

The 1836 Lettered Edge represents the final year of the beloved Capped Bust Half Dollar series. After nearly three decades of production, the Mint was preparing to transition to the new Reeded Edge design later that same year, making this lettered edge variety a true "end of an era" coin. While the mintage was substantial at over 6.5 million pieces, most survivors show heavy wear from circulation.
This PCGS AU58 example with its well-earned CAC sticker showcases exceptional preservation for the grade. The surfaces display beautiful original gray-silver color with hints of peripheral toning that add to the eye appeal. Sharp details remain throughout Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's feathers, with only light highpoint wear preventing a Mint State designation. The fields are remarkably clean with minimal contact marks, and the coin radiates the kind of original luster that CAC loves to see. A superb representative of this classic early American type.
