1837 Feuchtwanger Cent (1c) HT-268

PCGS XF45

Lewis Feuchtwanger's 1837 tokens represent a fascinating chapter in early American numismatic history. This German immigrant and chemist created these pieces from his patented "German silver" alloy (actually a nickel-copper-zinc composition) and petitioned Congress to adopt his metal for official U.S. coinage. While his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, these tokens circulated widely in New York and remain among the most important and historically significant of all early American private issues.

This PCGS XF45 example displays excellent detail retention and pleasing surfaces for the grade. The eagle's feathers remain well-defined, and the reverse lettering is bold and clear throughout. The coin shows an attractive medium gray patina with good eye appeal and minimal distracting marks. The surfaces are smooth and even, with the typical wear patterns expected for a choice XF grade. A solid representative example of this important early American token.
