1837 Feuchtwanger Three Cents (3c) HT-262
PCGS VF20
The 1837 Feuchtwanger token represents one of the most fascinating chapters in American numismatic history. Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger, a German immigrant and chemist, struck these tokens in his "German silver" composition as a demonstration to Congress that his metal alloy was superior to copper for coinage. Though his proposal was ultimately rejected, these privately-issued pieces circulated alongside official federal coinage and are among the most historically significant of all American tokens.
This PCGS VF20 example shows honest wear from circulation with well-preserved details throughout. The allegorical scene remains sharp and clear, with good definition in the drapery and facial features. The surfaces display even gray toning with some scattered dark spots on the obverse - typical for the composition and age. The reverse is particularly nice, showing crisp lettering in both the central denomination and the surrounding company name. A solid, problem-free example of this important piece of American monetary history.
