1852-O Gold Dollar ($1)

NGC AU58 CAC

The 1852-O Gold Dollar represents a pivotal issue from the New Orleans mint during the California Gold Rush era. While the Philadelphia mint was busy producing large quantities of gold coins from the newly discovered California gold, the New Orleans facility continued striking these diminutive gold dollars with a modest mintage of just 14,000 pieces. This southern mint issue is significantly scarcer than its Philadelphia counterpart, especially in higher grades.

This CAC-approved AU58 example sits just shy of uncirculated status and displays exceptional eye appeal for the grade. The surfaces retain much of their original mint luster with a warm, honey-gold color that remains undisturbed by harsh cleaning or improper handling. The strike is bold for a New Orleans issue, with crisp stars and clear details in Liberty's portrait. Minor circulation wear appears only on the highest points, consistent with the AU58 grade, while the fields show minimal marks. A superior example of this challenging Type 1 Gold Dollar from the Crescent City mint.
