1854 Gold Dollar (G$1) Type 1
PCGS MS63 CAC
The 1854 gold dollar marks the final year of the Type I design, capping off the initial era of small gold coinage that began with the California Gold Rush. While the mintage of 855,502 pieces was substantial for the time, the tiny size and soft gold composition meant most examples were quickly worn down in commerce or lost entirely. High-grade survivors like this one represent a small fraction of the original mintage.
This CAC-approved MS63 displays the kind of eye appeal that makes early gold so captivating. Rich, original golden-yellow surfaces show minimal contact marks, and the luster radiates beautifully under light. The strike is sharp throughout, with Liberty's hair curls and the reverse wreath showing full detail. For a coin that's spent 170 years in existence, the preservation is remarkable. A solid choice MS63 that punches well above its grade level.
