1860 Gold Dollar ($1)
NGC MS61
This NGC MS61 example displays excellent eye appeal for the grade, with rich golden surfaces that show strong cartwheel luster. The strike is sharp throughout, and while there are a few minor contact marks consistent with the MS61 designation, the overall presentation is quite attractive. The fields retain good mint brilliance, and the coin has clearly been well-preserved since leaving the Philadelphia Mint.
The 1860 represents a solid middle-date in the Type 3 Gold Dollar series, with a respectable mintage of 36,668 pieces. While not rare by gold dollar standards, finding nice uncirculated examples like this one becomes increasingly challenging as most were heavily circulated or melted during various gold recall periods. The Type 3 design had been in production for four years by 1860, so the mint had worked out most of the striking issues that plagued the earlier years of this series.
