1863-S Seated Liberty Dime (10c)

The 1863-S dime represents a fascinating piece of Civil War-era numismatics. While the Eastern states grappled with wartime economic upheaval and hoarding of precious metal coins, the San Francisco Mint continued regular production using California gold rush silver. The 1863-S had a mintage of just 157,500 pieces - significantly lower than Philadelphia's production that year - and survivor figures even lower, with an estimated 250 pieces still collectible. This is one of the scarcer dates in the Seated Liberty dime series.
This PCGS VF20 example with CAC approval shows exactly the kind of honest wear and original surfaces that make Civil War-era coinage so appealing. The coin displays even circulation with all major design elements clearly visible and well-defined. Liberty's head shows good detail, and the shield lines remain crisp. The surfaces are smooth and problem-free with attractive light gray patina throughout. A solid, original example that captures the era perfectly.
