1864 Two Cents (2c) Small Motto
NGC VF30 BN
The 1864 Small Motto Two Cent piece represents a significant transitional variety in American numismatics. Struck during the Civil War when copper coinage was hoarded by the public, this scarce variety was only produced briefly before being replaced by the more common Large Motto design.
This VF30 example certified by NGC displays an attractive, even chocolate-brown patina that has developed naturally over the past century and a half. Despite moderate circulation, the shield's vertical lines remain clearly visible, and the wreath on the reverse shows good detail throughout. The surfaces are problem-free with no significant marks or scratches, presenting excellent eye appeal for the assigned grade. A genuine piece of Civil War-era American history with the historic first appearance of our national motto.
