1869 Standard Silver Pattern Quarter (25c) J-731

PCGS PR66 CAM

This 1869 quarter (J-731) is a remarkable piece of pattern coinage reflecting a fascinating period of experimentation in U.S. Mint history. Patterns like this represent test designs or compositions, often produced in limited numbers, making them highly sought after.

The Standard Silver design was produced in small quantities and sold directly to collectors. Of course, numismatics was in its infancy in the US in the mid-1800s, so only a few sets were produced and sold.

Graded PR66CAM by PCGS, this coin is a splendid example of a proof with remarkable details and frosty cameo surfaces. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge, this is one of our namesake coins - a Rarity 7 with less than 6 known surviving examples. PCGS has registered only 5 grading events in total, and only 2 with the Cameo designation. A truly rare coin.
