1874 Arrows Seated Liberty Quarter (25c) Rattler
PCGS PR65
The 1874 Seated Liberty Quarter with arrows represents the second and final year of this short-lived variety. The arrows flanking the date were added in 1873 to denote a slight weight increase from 6.22 to 6.25 grams, mandated by the Coinage Act of 1873. Only 700 proof quarters were struck in 1874 with arrows, making this a genuinely scarce issue that was discontinued after just two years when the arrows were removed in 1875.
This stunning PR65 example housed in an old PCGS 1st-generation "Rattler" holder showcases the eye appeal that makes proof Seated Liberty quarters so desirable. Rich violet and blue toning dominates both sides, with deeper hues gathering in the protected areas around the devices and legends. The mirrors remain bold and reflective beneath the toning, creating beautiful contrast with the frosted motifs. The surfaces are exceptionally clean for the grade, showing only minor hairlines that keep it from an even higher designation. A gorgeous example of this brief but important variety.
