1890-S Morgan Dollar ($1)

PCGS MS65

The 1890-S Morgan had a mintage of 8,230,373 pieces - respectable for the era but on the lower side compared to many Morgan dates. What makes San Francisco Morgans from this period more challenging is that they didn't benefit from the massive treasury bag releases of the 1960s. While Philadelphia and some Denver issues sat preserved in government vaults for decades, most San Francisco coins entered circulation and acquired the wear and tear that comes with commerce.

This PCGS MS65 example showcases exactly why gem San Francisco Morgans command attention. The surfaces display a lovely combination of satiny luster and original silver-white color with hints of golden toning around the peripheries. The fields are remarkably clean for the grade, showing only the most minimal contact marks that you'd expect from a coin that achieved MS65 status. The eye appeal is excellent - this coin has that fresh, original look that makes Morgan dollars so collectible. A solid representative of this scarcer San Francisco issue.
