1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel (5c)

The 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel represents the inaugural year of this iconic series, but more importantly, it's the scarcer of the two design types produced that year. The Type I design, featuring the buffalo standing on a raised mound, was quickly modified mid-year to the Type II design with the buffalo standing on a line after it became clear that the raised mound would wear too quickly in circulation.

This CAC MS64 example showcases exactly why this type is so beloved. The surfaces display beautiful golden-brown toning with exceptional originality and eye appeal. The strike is sharp throughout, with full detail visible on both the Native American portrait and the buffalo. Contact marks are minimal and well-hidden, making this coin appear much finer than its technical grade suggests. The lustrous surfaces and clean fields make this an outstanding representative of this historic first-year type.
